Winter fishing fly (Big Red)

Hook size: 10-14.
Rust colored marabou through tail and body.
Rust colored Chenille, medium to extra small depending on hook size.
Brown saddle hackle trimmed short for ribbing.
Brown head on unweighted; black on weighted

This has been one of my most successful flies for the winter months when nothing else seems to work. Here in Boise, my winter plans have all but been put on hold from the subzero temperatures that have been running rampant.  The days are becoming short and mixed with constantly changing temperatures making the fishing hard.  Look for peak hatches, usually around 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, to come off at this point.  Remember when things are coming off on top, nymphing can be a great way to land some and be productive.   If you are in some deep water try to mix things up with a non-tapered leader.

Hit Me up Widget

So there have been some questions about the hit me up link on my blog page.  Pretty cool app if you ask me.  It will work and it will actually call one of my working numbers.  I live for fly fishing!! It is more like a way of life for me.  I want to hear stories, listen to fish reports, reflections while on the water, and anything on fly fishing you can come up with.  I find that it is a great way to get inspiration for my writings on fly fishing, so please by all means, "Hit Me Up".

Children

In the celebration of my new family addition, I first want to thank the staff here at St. Lukes hospital for taking care of my son and the precious woman in my life. Both are well and expected to go home soon. I can never say enough about the two passions of my life. Being a father to my children is the one thing that I truly live for and fly fishing is the one thing that keeps me sane. The season is seeming to come on strong this winter and the time to clean, bang out some flies, and reflect on what has hopefully been a successful season. Don't forget many places still have some good winter fishing as well. Check with your local fish and game to see what places are still accessible.
For those of you here in Boise, don't look past the Boise River here in town. Steelhead have been stocked and it has produced some fun fishing. There are also plenty of trout in that river. It is a great place to try out your new pattern and tweak it until it works just right, or practice a new technique that you want to better yourself for next season, and even just have a little time to yourself to get a peace of mind. I love to take people out and get them on the river this time of year too. I'm here for anyone interested in learning the sport or wanting to get away. Just give me a holler!!
Good luck to everyone still on the water!! Remember that God doesn't count a day against a person's life when they are spending it on the water. Drift it, Swing it and Nymph it; Just catch the fish.

Fly fishing

Beauty surrounds us all and affects us differently in many ways. People of all walks of life find their beauty from their passions, and some even make their passions their ways of life. Fishing to me, especially on the fly, creates a beauty that some have never found or have taken lifetimes to achieve. Whether it was the coolness of the water, the gentle breeze on the hot summers day, or the back ground and scenery that always leaves its mark on our souls. Catching a fish always makes the perfect end to a perfect moment when that beauty imprints itself in our minds, and leaves us always coming back for more.

I am starting this blog to tell of my adventures and dreams that all start with a fly rod and reel and how my life plays in those waters. Fly fishing is a never ending experience when it comes to learning. With the endless patterns of flies and tactics we all share, the mystery reveals itself in those waters leaving us vivid memories that last forever. I hope anyone who reads these trials and errors I encounter and finds them rewarding and enjoyable. I am a student like anyone else in the waters, and together i feel we all can unravel the mysteries together. After all fishing isn't always about catching a fish, its enjoying the company or solitude and enjoying this life we live to the fullest of its capacities.
